The Master - Bud Carson
Bud Carson manning the grader on the 1/4 mile
track at Oklahoma City in the 60's. Many people know Bud as the Oklahoma City promoter,
but did you know Bud was a great racing announcer and also promoted the Oklahoma State
Fairgrounds drag strip.
OKC FACT: That's right, there used to
be a drag strip on the south side of the fairgrounds until cars got too fast for the shut
down area. Larry Wilson, former drag racer, modified & super driver as well as
father of local racer Donnie Wilson can tell you about that, Larry was driving a rail and
went out the end of the shut down area and finally stopped inside of a horse barn.
Sustaining some injuries.
OKC FACT: Mar-Car, Inc. fielded an old
coupe at the drags. |

Florida
1980
Volusia County Raceway, right outside of Daytona,
the 1/2 mile track was sand
but they dumped crude oil on the track, was very tacky but turned everything
black.....uniforms, gloves, etc. I think the EPA shut it down, now that
track is paved and they built a Georgia red clay 3/8 mile track on the same
grounds. |
