DE-Suggs-73.jpg (64154 bytes) D. E. Suggs - 1973 Tulsa Super Modified A-Feature Winner.
100's of these prints were given to the team to pass out at the races by Speedprint of Tulsa.   Insets: Car owners  left-Noel Crain, right-Danny Thurman. . This style of body was known as an Okie Sprinter manufactured by Broken Arrow Fiberglass.  This car featured a space frame built by Tulsa's Benny Taylor, the rest of the car was built by Noel and Danny with help from other family members.  Noel and Danny also built the engines..  The right rear tire was a Firestone and on the sidewall had the words "A Big Jeloney" and the 29 compound Jeloney was the hot right rear for several years.
DE-1.jpg (79276 bytes) Great color still.
Here is another A-feature winner shot of D.E. in the Crain-Thurman super at Tulsa in 1973. The wild psychedelic paint was by Larry Crain of Tulsa.  D.E. was so relaxed that he would occasionally fall a sleep while sitting in the staging area waiting for the A-feature to start.
DESuggs-74.gif (108487 bytes) Inspection day 1974.
D.E. drove the Hill & Moery #11 in Oklahoma City during and the Crain & Thurman #1 at Tulsa in 1974. This car was custom built by Nance.  This is the car D.E. took out of the park in OKC in the fall of 1973, the final race of the season D.E. was bumped from behind and finally landed in the parking lot totally one spectators car and damaging 2 others. Paint and lettering on this car was done by Gary Littleness.
Bo&DE-OKC.jpg (63508 bytes) This is a photo from an old OKC program.
The hat and arm above the right rear tire belong to Bo Chambers, owner of Bo's Racing Collectibles in Oklahoma City.   The driver is D.E. Suggs and the car is Larry Hill's Steve Stapp built Champ Dirt Car. Johnny Gilmore lengthened the wheelbase a few inches and installed a smaller tail and tank to run the car as a super. Johnny Gilmore was also responsible for the motors in this car.  The big tank was for the dry  sump oiling system, something new to the local supers at this time.
DESuggsG&H11.jpg (61599 bytes) D.E. Suggs in action caught by Jim Chesnut in 1978.
D.E. won the Oklahoma State Fair Championship in this car.   Former Knoxville Nationals winner Thad Dosher was the driver of this car when Larry campaigned the car with USAC prior to converting it to a super.  Mike Peters would later drive this car to a season championship in OKC.
DE&Ernie.jpg (80190 bytes) The Aardvark III
D.E Suggs and pit man Ernie Messmer posing with the "Aardvark III".  This car was owned by D.E. & his wife Velma.  The chassis was a Gilmore and was basically a copy of a Stapp USAC champ dirt car.
